Click Torque Wrenches
The Clicker-type torque wrench is the most commonly used torque wrench in the oil and gas industry today. There’s a good reason why: A clicker wrench is an affordable and extremely accurate tool — so long as you use it properly. Clicker wrenches are not power tools, but a manual method to achieve proper torque (a.k.a. bolt load) on your fastener.
Most clickers are square-drive torque wrenches. They typically have a ratchet head with drive sizes of 3/8″, 1/2″, or 3/4″. However, most assemblers need to have open-ended attachments for the low clearance issues whey often encounter in the field. When a clicker wrench is pulled to the point of the torque setting, the lever inside the wrench rolls over a cam and hits the inside of the wrench handle wall. This effect makes the “click” sound, and tells the operator that they have reached the desired torque value.
Dial Torque Wrenches
Out of all the analog wrench types, the dial torque wrench is the most expensive as well as a popular one. The reason behind this is that these wrenches can do the most complicated, measurement-sensitive tasks very easily.
There are specific use cases where measurement is so sensitive that it’s easy to make mistakes with a regular torque wrench. For example – applying the exact torque on a small engine bolt or a nut in a high-end machine has to be done right, or otherwise, there could be serious problems in the future. A dial torque wrench offers the highest level of torque adjustments as well as a reading dial to help you adjust the torque force as you do your work. These devices are reliable and have been one of the most popular wrench choices for beginners and experts alike.
Digital Torque Wrenches
Electronic torque wrenches have a similar function to a basic click-type torque wrench. Digital wrenches use a simple push-button digital interface to display torque readout and allow to you adjust your desired torque settings. The digital display is decidedly easier to read and understand than rotating the handle, and additional features like an LED light, an audible sound, or a vibrating handle are helpers to inform the user that they have reached the desired torque setting. Beyond those features, some wrenches provide a warning as you approach your torque setting to aid in preventing over-torquing a fastener during use. These wrenches can also measure torque in up to five different unit sets including Newton meters, foot-pounds, inch-pounds, kilogram-feet, and kilogram-centimeters as the units can be toggled in the display settings. Overall, digital torque wrenches offer increased ease of use over a standard click-type wrench.
